CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS

Cervical spondylosis is a degenerative condition of the vertebral column, occurring at the level of cervical vertebrae. It is otherwise considered to be the osteoarthritis of the cervical spine and is most often an age-related condition.

More than 90 percent of people older than age 65 have evidence of cervical spondylosis and osteoarthritis that can be seen on neck X-rays. Most of these people experience no symptoms from these problems. When symptoms do occur, nonsurgical treatments often are effective.

Symptoms

  • Pain
  • Muscle Weakness.
  • Headache
  • Altered Sensation.
  • Bladder or Bowel disturbances
  • Tingling sensation, weakness of the legs and Foot drop

Ayurveda Management

In Ayurveda, Cervical spondylosis is referred to by the names “Apabaahuka” which refers to weakness and inability to use the hands as a result of Vata getting disturbed at the base of the hands and “Vishvaachi”. Vishvaachi is a condition described, where in pain travels from the neck down to the hands. This description resembles cervical radiculopathy.

 

Ayurvedic treatment of Cervical spondylosis, comprises of herbal medicines and therapies that help to relax the muscles, relieve inflammation to the nerves and surrounding tissues, healing the damage to the nerves and in strengthening the nerves and muscles.

Panchakarma therapies like Abhyanga, swedam( patra pinda sweda, churna pinda sweda, ssps) Nasyam, Shirovasti or shirodhara, Sarvangadhara, Greeva basti, Vasti are usually done based on the persons presentation and severity of the disease. Average duration of therapy may range between 4 – 6 weeks and most of the cases experience high recovery.
